Managing the text styles displayed in a Word document is essential. This is the case whether you apply styles using the Quick Styles gallery or the Styles task pane. Because it helps to ensure you’re not wasting time trying to find the right style when needed.
Apart from making it easier to find the style you’re looking for, selecting the text styles to show limits the available styles. So it means text formatting in your document is more likely to remain consistent.
Select styles to show in Word
It’s a relatively straightforward process to show text styles in Word. And the process is essentially the same where you want to hide styles.
Note that to show (or hide) styles in the Quick Styles gallery, they must first be displayed in the Styles task pane. Only then will you be able to add the styles to the gallery also.
Show text styles in the Styles task pane
To display (or hide) a style in the Styles task pane:
- Open the Styles task pane
Click the Styles dialogue box launcher (Home > Styles) to open the Styles task pane. Or use the shortcut key. - Open the Manage Styles dialogue box
Click the Manage Styles button. You’ll find this at the bottom of the task pane, third from the left. - Choose which styles to show in your document
Click the Recommend tab. Then deselect the Show recommended styles only checkbox. And sort the list in alphabetical order. This will make it easier to find the styles you’re looking for.
Scroll through the list to locate the relevant style. Once you’ve found the style, select it and click the Show or Hide button as required.
Follow the above process for all the styles you’d like to show or hide in the Styles task pane.
Add and remove styles from the Quick Styles gallery
To add or remove a style from the Quick Styles gallery:
- Right click the style in the Styles task pane;
- Select Add to Style Gallery or Remove from Style Gallery, as applicable.
Note: you can also remove a style from the Quick Styles gallery, via the gallery itself. Simply right click the style in the gallery and select Remove from Style Gallery.
