Word shortcut: copy formatting

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

Word’s shortcut to copy formatting switches on the Format Painter feature. It enables you to copy formatting from one part of a document to another.

Here’s how to copy text formatting using the Format Painter shortcut:

  • Select the text that contains the formatting you want to copy, and press Ctrl+Shift+C;
  • Select the text you’d like to copy the formatting to, and press Ctrl+Shift+V.

The desired formatting is now applied to the text.

Note that Format Painter stores the copied formatting until you copy different formatting. This means you can paste the formatting using Ctrl+Shift+V as many times as needed.

June 2024 update

If the above shortcuts don’t work for you, try using Ctrl+Alt+C and Ctrl+Alt+V instead. Microsoft seems to be moving to these as the shortcuts for copying formatting in Word (with a rollout of feature updates).

And if you find this alternative works, then try using the Ctrl+Shift+V shortcut to paste text without formatting. Microsoft has also repurposed this shortcut with the rollout of feature updates.
