Word shortcut: insert page break

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Below you’ll find the shortcut to insert a page break in Word.  This is the best option to use when you need specific content to start on a new page.  Here’s why.

When you insert a manual page break in Word, it forces a complete break between the new and preceding page.  This means that any content you add to the preceding page does not affect the content on the new page.

What many people do however (and I’ve seen this a lot), is insert empty paragraphs to force content onto the next page.  The problem with this method is when you add more content above the empty paragraphs, all content below also shifts down.  And so the content you wanted on a new page no longer sits at the top of the page.  Definitely not ideal!

So instead, use the following shortcut key to insert a page break in Word.  It’s quick and easy, and will always ensure content in your document sits exactly where you need it to.

Here’s how:

  • Place the cursor at the point where you’d like content to appear on a new page;
  • Press Ctrl+Enter.

Or if you’d prefer to use the Ribbon, click the Page Break button (Insert > Pages).

Finally, if all you need to do is keep a few paragraphs together, then format the relevant paragraph to Keep with next instead. This method will also help with the flow of content if you add or remove any text to your document.
