Word shortcut: repeat last action

Estimated reading time: 1 minute

The Word shortcut to repeat the last action is used to repeat something simple you’ve just done.

For example, you could use the shortcut to apply bold formatting to other words or sentences. Or you could use it to paste copied text to different parts of your document.

The shortcut key to repeat the last action in Word is F4. You can also use Ctrl+Y.

Here’s an example of how it works:

  • You select a word and apply bold formatting;
  • You decide you’d also like to apply bold formatting to other text in your document. So you select the other text, and press F4 (or Ctrl+Y) – bold formatting is applied;
  • You then repeat the process as many times as you like. This is, of course, on the proviso that you don’t perform a different command in the meantime. Because otherwise this command will be repeated instead.

Note: if F4 doesn’t work to repeat the last action, press the F Lock or Fn key on your keyboard. Then try again.
